Gates of Lodore Green River Raft Trip
Date: August 19–23, 2010 (4 nights/5 days)
Instructors: Dr. Andrew Gulliford and Gary Ladd
Fee: $930
Our exceptional instructors, Dr. Andrew Gulliford and Gary Ladd, lead the ultimate river trip through the human history, archaeology, geology and spectacular red rock scenery of panoramic and pristine Dinosaur National Monument. Savor the spirited Green River from the Gates of Lodore where two 800-foot buttresses mark the beginning of a series of scarlet slot canyons, sweeping valleys and lush ledges of emerald green vegetation to Split Mountain Gorge, where our journey ends. View dramatic towering vermillion cliffs cut from Precambrian bedrock, leapfrog through time across a geologic fault and thrill to rapids like Disaster Falls and Hell's Half Mile (A drop of 30 feet in less than a half mile!)
Dr. Andrew Gulliford, Fort Lewis College Professor of History and Southwest Studies, helps us retrace Major John Wesley Powell’s exciting 1869 exploration of the Green River, the largest tributary of the Colorado River. Visit the sites Powell visited, view landmarks he named, and enjoy entertaining stories about his harrowing adventures on his historic journey.
Gary Ladd, renowned Southwest photographer, author and inexhaustible student of geology and astronomy shares his deep understanding and appreciation of stars and strata. And he may share a pointer or two on how to take a great photo!
